Kitchen Garbage Disposal – An Important Subject

Kitchen garbage disposal should be an important part of your everyday home hygiene routine.

Inefficient food waste disposal can be a serious health hazard if left in an inappropriate situation, causing bad odors and attracting flies that lay eggs in it which soon hatch to maggots. Even if securely bagged and placed outside, it is likely to be opened by stray dogs, cats or wildlife, which apart from being dangerous to them, then also pollutes the local environment.

The answer to this problem is a domestic waste disposal unit. There are various types of these, but by far the most popular are the sink waste disposal units. These fit under the sink, between the drain of the sink and the trap, and grind the food waste so small it can travel through the pipes to the main sewage system or septic tank.

Most disposal units have a motor between a half and a one horsepower,  powered by electricity, and can take everything from vegetable peelings,to egg shells, small bones such as chicken bones and leftovers, however cooking oils and fats should never be poured down drain as they can clog the system. (This applies whether you have a waste disposal unit or not!)

The first domestic waste disposal units were designed by John Hammes in 1927 and things have come a long way since then. They now benefit from modern technology and are far more efficient than their earlier counterparts. Their construction is mainly stainless steel or fibreglass to prevent rust or corrosion and the grinding blades are sound insulated to prevent excess noise.

The popularity of these disposal units is growing fast as homeowners realize the benefits of having such an useful and easy solution to the problem of getting rid of their kitchen waste. They will soon become a standard feature of every modern home.
